Happy birthday to my Er Jie!

Another year has passed and it's my Er jie's birthday again! This year, we have a new family member joining us soon next month and my Er jie is going to be a mother! I can still vividly remember the times when we were young where my sister will play with me or we will quarrel over toys and clothes. Now that we are older, we tend to cherish our times together more often and now that she is going to be a mother, these time together are even more cherished as she will have to devote more time for her baby princess.

So this time round, I decided to make her a rose cake. To be honest, it is supposed to be a "test drive" for the cake that I am going to make for a charity cake auction in office. I saw a video online by cakestyle who created a very pretty 3D rose cake by sculpting the cake and covering it with fondant and therefore I wanted to make one too.

But when I get my hands on to it, it is not as easy as it seems! I have to cut bigger petals per layer to cover the cake and the angle of the petals need to be adjusted too. In the end, the top view of the cake looks really nice! But it is a very different kind of rose from the video that I have saw. LOL.

I really like how it looks from the top view!

Birthday girl with the cake! The side of the cake does not look as fantastic and therefore I request them to take photos from a high angle but it makes the birthday girl looks weird. LOL. So here is a photo that both the birthday girl and the cake looks alright.

Happy birthday to my dearest Er jie! Thanks for always thinking for me and the family. I wish that littlemisspar will grow up strong and healthy and pretty and I can't wait to cuddle her in my arms and play with her! I wish that you will be happy and healthy as well with your bundle of joy and enjoy life with your little family. I love you lots!

Barney 2-tier cake...

Another order from Joey and this time round is for her 2 year old son Jarren. She wanted a Barney cake and therefore I got the toppers for it. In addition she said that her son loves farm elements, spider, etc and therefore I put those elements into the design of the cake as well.

This is a 2-tier 5" and 8" cake.

Hope Jarren had a wonderful birthday party!

Spongebob cake and cupcakes set....

An order from Sebrina who wanted a Spongebob 2-tier cake and cupcakes set for a birthday celebration in office for ET.

This is a mini 2-tier 4" and 6" cake. And although I have not really watched Spongebob but I think I do vaguely remember Spongebob lives in a pineapple house under the sea? LOL.

Not to forget the characters in the Spongebob show too! Although I only know Spongebob and someone called Patrick if I'm not wrong?

Hope ET had a wonderful birthday celebration!

Superman and Wonderwoman mini 2-tier cake....

An order from Feng who wanted a superman and wonderwoman two-tier cake for a small birthday plus anniversary celebration. As it is for a small group, I suggested a mini 4" and 6" two-tier cake.

The cake turned out nice and neat and it good for a small party!

Hope they enjoyed the cake!

Rilakuma cupcakes...

An order from a youngest customer I ever had and that is Wayne, my nephew! He wanted a set of cupcakes for his best friend Sophie's birthday and he even went to ask for her favourite character. So sweet of him! And as my Da jie wanted him to learn the value of money, I collected a minimal sum of money from him for the set of cupcakes that he ordered (he borrowed the money from his mother).

He even wrote his own order form below.

So I did the cupcakes accordingly and the birthday girl likes it!

Happy birthday Sophie!

Family at the beach cake....

This is an order from Fione who wanted a beach cake with her whole family on it for his husband's birthday party. She has some specific requirements such as she wanted her figurine to be wearing a one-piece swimsuit, and also specific hair lengths for the girls.

I have watched an online tutorial on molding human and therefore this time round, I tried my hands on it and it certainly looks more human-like although there is still great room for improvement!

Hope Daniel likes the cake and the family enjoys the party!

Fione was happy that the figurines look like them. What do you think?

Happy mother's day to all!

A set of mother's day cupcakes for all the great mothers out there! Enjoy this special day of yours and thanks for all that you have done!

Special thanks to my mummy for all her sacrifices and contributions to the family! We love you!

Angry bird cupcakes...

This is my first set of angry bird cupcakes and is an order from Wee Liang. I made all the different kind of birds on it with the pigs as well and I think it turned out great! Just missing the blocks and music if not we can play the game! LOL!

I think it will be back in trend when the movie comes out later!

Green lantern cupcakes...

Another yearly affair from Rachel who has been ordering cakes and cupcakes for her son Jordan's birthday since he was 5! Thanks for the support!

I think the boy loves superheroes as last year he wanted flash cupcakes and this year, he wanted green lantern cupcakes. LOL! But this is a neat and nice set of cupcakes. Hope the birthday boy likes it!

Happy 7th birthday Jordan!

Hellokitty cake and cupcakes set...

This is an order from Love Riel who wanted a sweet hellokitty cake and cupcakes set. I crafted the hellokitty face free hand for both the cake and the cupcakes. Hope she likes it!

Happy Birthday Meiying!

Descendants of the Sun (DOTS) cupcakes...

This is a special post just for DOTS cupcakes as I think that it is worth a post on it! LOL. If you have read my previous post, you would have known that these cupcakes are created for a charity sale and have it not been for my BF's idea, I would not have done it.

Really love the show and definitely love the main leads as well, especially SJK (fan girl mode on). LOL. Despite some illogical scenes, the plot and the songs are really good. I have specifically chose these pictures as I felt that these are the few scenes (out of the many) that are really important and nice. But of course, there are a lot more which I cannot possibly print all of them out. LOL. I know that there are a lot of DOTS fans out there, so hope you all will like these DOTS cupcakes!

Jembakes does charity for the third time!

This is the third time we have participated in the citi charity sale and this time round we have broaden our scope and covered orders from different businesses in citi. This is definitely an experience for us in making bulk orders and also a good opportunity for us to make our presence known. And at the same time, we are able to give back to the community and contribute to the donation for MDAS. This year, Jembakes have managed to help raise a total fund of $3,400 just from our cakes and cupcakes sale! Really grateful for all the support from those who ordered our cakes and cupcakes and we thank you on behalf of our beneficiary.

Check out our previous two contributions to the charity sale below.

http://jembakes.blogspot.sg/2013/08/jembakes-does-charity-again.html

So this time round, the whole baking and delivering process took us 2 whole weeks and we can finally rest for a while before we start on clearing our normal orders again. I provided a few cakes and cupcakes design for them to choose from and those designs are the "classic" and "popular" items that were frequently ordered such as the minion, crayon shin chan and the citi logo. Here are some of the orders that were delivered with some customization for each of them.

An order from Santosh
An order from Steven
An order from Joo Hong
An order from CDS
An order from Margie
Thank you Margie for the generous donation!
An order from Marcus
An order from John

The orders for one of the days
it was lucky that we staggered the date of the delivery so that we will not have to rush out all the orders at one go. But there are some days that we have to deliver quite a few of the cakes and cupcakes together. Glad that we managed to pull it off!

An order from Devraj
An order from Vima

An order from Stacey
These are purely the pre-orders and we still have the actual sale of the cupcakes at the charity food stall in the lobby of our building. So my genius BF came up with the idea of doing "Descendants of the Sun" cupcakes which is currently the hottest show right now! And I really love the show! LOL. That was a really great idea as the cupcakes were sold out very fast and were a hit amongst all the fan girls at work!

I ordered the icing image and paste on the cupcakes. They were easy to do and looks good. Special thanks to my BF for helping out in making these cupcakes! On a side note, the cupcakes with SJK face was so popular I was left with only a few even before the start of the sale. LOL.

Individually packed for sale
So with the successful sale of the DOTS cupcakes, just when I thought that we are done with all the baking, I was tasked to bake another cake for our cake auction which managed to raised $2000! So I have to bake a cake to be presented to the bid winner, Christine Lam. In the end, we decided to do a citi credit card with her name on it as the design of the cake.

12" square chocolate cake weighing 5-6kg
I put in all the credit card elements such as the visa paywave the credit card no, etc. Glad that it turns out good and Christine likes the cake. Really thankful for her generous contribution to MDAS!

Ramen cake...

This is an interesting order from Ariss who previously ordered a Goyard wallet cake. It seems like hers orders are all quite challenging. LOL. See her previous order below.

http://jembakes.blogspot.sg/2016/03/goyard-wallet-cake.html

This time round she wanted a 3D ramen cake! I have not done it before but it is an interesting order so I took up the challenge. I used a half dome cake as the "bowl" and add in the elements of ramen on the bowl. I love to eat ramen and I'm definitely craving for ramen now after making the cake!

Hope Ali enjoyed eating his "ramen"!

Minnie mouse cake...

Another order from Rachel and this time she wanted a Minnie mouse cake for her friend. It is a small 6" cake and the minnie mouse head fits nicely. The minnie mouse head is not edible.

Happy birthday Aiying!

Goyard wallet cake...

An order from Ariss who wanted to order a Goyard wallet cake. To be honest, I have not heard of the brand before and so she show me the picture of the wallet and I suggested using icing image for the wallet print. As the wallet is very flat, it will be hard to do a 3D wallet. I made a rectangle cake and wrapped it like a box and place the "wallet" inside instead.

Hope Carie likes her new "wallet"! Happy birthday!

Super Mario cake...

This is an order from Jingwen who wanted a Super Mario cake. This is an easy order where I bought the Mario topper and placed it on the cake with the Super Mario elements such as the mushrooms and the coins. I used to play it when I was young! LOL.

Hope Ian likes the cake! Happy birthday!

Saturday 5 March 2016

Beer cake...

Another beer cake and this time round it is an order from Carie.

Although I have done this cake for a few times, but this time round I was met with some challenges as there was a shortage of buttercream icing from the supplier and therefore I was not able to get it to make the "foam" of the beer. To replace that, I got the icing mix which will have to be whipped up before use. However, the consistency was too soft and the icing began to flow down the beer cup instead of staying on top like the previous ones I did.

It created another effect which actually looks like an overflowing beer mug. LOL.

Glad Carie likes the cake and Happy birthday to your Dad!

Maserati car cake...

New challenge at the start of the year! This is an order from Ting Ting, my Er Jie's uni friend who wanted to order a Maserati car cake for her husband who drives a Maserati. She has saw the Audi car cake that I did for my BIL on my sis's FB and therefore wants to order a Maserati car cake from me. Thanks for putting so much trust in me! Check out the Audi car cake below.

http://jembakes.blogspot.sg/2015/11/3d-car-cake-for-my-bil.html

She sent me her husband's car photo and therefore I started on my cake sculpting first. Like the Audi car cake, we baked 2 rectangle cake and stacked them together for sculpting. However, as Maserati is supposed to be a sports car which is very sleek, I tried to sculpt it in that way. But my rectangle mould is too short and therefore the front is not long enough. Think I have to get a longer rectangle mould for baking car cakes so that my sculpting is not as restricted in terms of the length. LOL. Nevertheless, I worked within the scope and tried to make the car to scale.

The cake sculpting is done. At this point, at least it looks like a car. First stage passed.

The most important part of the car : the logo! I think there is some improvement from the previous 3D car that I've made in terms of the width which I made it less wide this time round. However, there is still room for improvement in terms of the length of the car. And maybe next time I will want to try to paint the windows black instead of pasting black fondant.

Thanks Ting Ting for the order and the nice and encouraging comments. Glad your family love it and Happy birthday to Bernard!

Flower cake for my Da Jie's birthday!

February is a busy month for me as 3 of our family members are born in the month and 2 days after Ulyss' birthday, it's her mother and that is my Da Jie's birthday! This time round we had a belated birthday celebration for her as I was away in Bkk for vacation during the mother and daughter's birthday period (hence I'm not able to do another cake for Ulyss' birthday party at a indoor playground and they ordered a Princess Sofia ice-cream cake in the end).

As mentioned in my start of the year post, my resolution this year is to start on flower decorations and I have bought a flower modelling kit. After 2 months, I finally got my hands on it and opened the kit. LOL. The flowers are really very nice but just reading the instruction booklet with some pictures at the side, it is a bit hard to understand without some practical demonstration. And some of the flowers need drying overnight. Therefore, I settled on a flower that looks the simplest for a start.

The one on the left was the first one I did, the one on the right, having more experience, looks better. However, it does not really look like what was on the picture (shall not post it here for comparison) LOL. So, I guess there is still room for improvements, or maybe I should just go for a lesson on flower making. Shall keep my options open. Nevertheless, it still looks good on its own and at least it looks like flowers. LOL.

Happy Birthday to my dearest Da Jie! We had dinner at Buffet Town at Raffles City which is also a treat from Er Jie for her bonus payout! Yummy oysters and salmon all thanks to Er Jie! You can eat it next year! LOL.
Me with the flowers after it was taken off the cake. It still looks good. LOL.

Golf ball cake...

This is an order from Wai Fong and is actually gotten from my parents where they went to her maid agency to hire a maid and my dad was showing her the birthday cake that I did for his 62nd birthday. Check out the cake that I did for my daddy below.

http://jembakes.blogspot.sg/2014/09/daddys-62nd-birthday.html

But Wai Fong only wanted the golf ball on the top tier therefore we just baked a chocolate based golf ball cake for her using 2 semi circle cake pan. The ball turns out quite round and it looks just like a golf ball.

Hope Francis likes the cake! Happy 57th Birthday!

4 little pigs cake...

This is an order from Rachel who wanted 4 pigs on a cake. So I suggested having the 4 pigs in a farm and this is quite an easy cake and the pigs turn out quite cute (although a bit dirty from the mud). LOL.

Happy Birthday Sara! Hope you like the pigs!

Princess Ulyss turns 4!

It's the time of the year again! It's always a headache for the mummy and her daughter to settle on a theme for the little girl's birthday party every year especially so when her number of favourite characters keep growing. So this year, they settled on Rapunzel theme for the school's party (initially the girl wanted tinker bell). Actually, her 1st birthday party was also done in Rapunzel theme and she was actually the hairless Rapunzel at that time. LOL. Check out her 1st birthday party below.

http://jembakes.blogspot.sg/2013/07/princess-ulysss-1st-birthday_20.html

At that time the two-tier princess cake was actually a dummy cake as I was still new to cake decorating and constructing a two-tier cake. 3 years have passed and I have done a few castle cake over the time and therefore this time round I am more confident to take up the challenge.

However, to make things easy and more stable, I still bought some styrofoam cones and cylinders to create the castle and therefore only the base is made of a 6"cake.

This is one of the sweetest castle that I have made. Totally love the sweet pastel colour combination. Rapunzel topper is provided by the birthday girl herself (one of her toy). I also ordered some Rapunzel icing image to paste on the cupcakes.

Happy Birthday Ulyss! Finally a Rapunzel with hair!
Look at how big the little girl is now. She is a big Jie Jie in school!
Happy Birthday my dear girl! It is amazing to see how you have grown up to be so active and different from how your brother is, showing us that each have their own personalities and are unique in their own ways. Thanks for bringing us so much laughter and happiness and Xiao yi wishes that you continue to grow up strong and healthy! I'm glad that you always enjoy the cakes that I do and I hope I can continue to make your birthday cakes till you are tired of it! LOL!

Maisy cake...

An order from my Da Jie's long time friend, Diana, for her son Dylan's birthday party in school. She wanted a Maisy cake for the party. Maisy is a popular character of a story book and it looks like a mouse. She wanted Maisy and her favourite bear on the cake.

Therefore, I created a Maisy picnic cake with some picnic elements on it such as the picnic box, fruits, drinks, etc. And definitely not forgetting to bring along her favourite bear.

Diana said she loves the details on the cake which is all favourites of a 3 year old kid. Glad she likes it and Dylan had an enjoyable birthday party.

Happy Birthday Dylan!
Thanks Diana for the order!
